On Metrics to Quantify the Inter-Device Uniqueness of Physically Unclonable Functions

چکیده
Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) have been an emerging topic in hardware security and trust in recent years, and many different kinds of PUFs have been presented in the literature. An important criterion is always the diversity of PUF responses for different devices, called inter-device uniqueness. A very popular uniqueness metric consists of calculating the pairwise hamming distance between the response bitstrings of all devices, assuming that all response bits are uncorrelated. Such correlations, however, should be regarded when a statement about inter-device uniqueness is made. We therefore propose a novel correlation metric to fulfil this requirement. Furthermore, we show that the hamming distance metric is actually redundant when at the same time the also popular bit-aliasing metric is applied.

TV-PUF : A Fast Lightweight Analog Physically Unclonable Function
Physical Unclonable Function (PUF) is hardware analog of a one-way function which can address hardware security issues such as device authentication, generating secret keys, producing seeds for Random Number Generators, etc. Traditional silicon PUFs are based on delay (Ring Oscillator PUFs and Arbiter PUFs) or memory structures (like SRAM). In this paper, we propose a novel idea of a very fast,...

The evaluation of Physically Unclonable Function (PUFs) quality is an open problem, as the PUF represents a circuit signature which depends on process variation but also environmental conditions. Some metrics consisting in analysing the statistics of PUF outputs have been introduced. The considered metrics are often the randomness (max entropy), the uniqueness (two PUFs should be different), an...

متن کاملArchitectural Bias: a Novel Statistical Metric to Evaluate Arbiter PUF Variants
This paper introduces the notion of Architectural Bias, which can be used to measure the influence of the architecture of Arbiter Physically Unclonable Functions (APUFs) on the quality of its outputs. A PUF design with less architectural bias is better than one which has more architectural bias. Architectural bias is the bias in the challenge-response behavior of a PUF due to the architectural ...
